Recently the bullpen printer (HP Color LaserJet 3500) has died and we opted to get a replacement - a Brother HL-4150CDN.
In order to use the new printer smoothly, there are a few things that need to be done:
1) Uninstall the old bullpen printer
For instructions on how to remove a printer, visit this Confluence page to see how.
2) Install the drivers for the new Brother printer
For the new Brother printer driver, visit this webpage.
Select your operating system and language and click "Search".
Unless you are an advanced user and customizing your install, click on the first "Download & Information" link you see (Usually along the names of "Full Driver and Software Package").
Click on "Download" and then "I Accept."
Once you download the driver software, install it as you would any other program.
For Windows:
When it asks to connect to your printer, select the "Wired Network Connection (Ethernet)" and NOT the local USB option.
Then select the "Brother Peer-to-Peer Network Printer" option.
Keep the recommended firewall option and click Next.
Simply click next when asked what features to install.
(It might search for a network printer and probably won't find anything. If it asks to keep searching, click No)
In the "Network Search Type" box, choose to specify the printer by address - the IP address is 172.23.131.232.
Let it install. Once it's done, the printer should be installed and visible in your list of printers.
For Mac:
Download the .dmg from the Brother driver website. Extract it and run the package - you should now see an installation dialogue.
Accept the license and install.
Open up the Print & Fax menu in the System Settings and add a new printer.
Click on the IP tab and select the "Internet Printing Protocol (IPP)".
Put "bullpen-printer.ncmir.ucsd.edu" for the address and it should automatically select the Brother HL-4150CDN CUPS driver.
Click Add to add the printer.
For Linux:
Download the .ppd file attached here (hl4150cdn.ppd).
Run your printer setup utility.
